The first white family to settle in the Basinger area was named Daughtrey. Two brothers, Arthur and Thomas, originally from east Tennessee, came to the lower Kissimmee River valley during the 1860’s. Thomas settled on the river north of Fort Basinger and had a landing there during the 1870’s. He later moved about five miles south of Fort Basinger and was living there in 1882. Arthur set up his homestead near the site of Fort Basinger. By 1885, Arthur and Thomas Daughtrey had moved from the valley to the Zolfo-Crewsville area.
