James D. writes: "According to his Civil War pension records from the State of Florida John was wounded near the spine (probably by shrapnel) at Gettysburg prior to being captured. For some time he was carried on his Company records as killed in action, although I have been unable to document this. He was granted a pension due to his wound."

  • John R. Nelson (Jacksonville, FL).  Private John Franklin Leggett, Company E, 5th Florida Infantry is John R.'s paternal grandmother's great-grandfather. John R. writes: "He is already listed in your Master Soldier Index. On Jul. 2, 1863, John was taken prisoner at Gettysburg. The Florida Brigade took part in the attack on Cemetary Ridge that day but had to fall back when Union forces counter-attacked. After the 5th retreated, his comrades reported that he had been killed. The company muster carried him as killed-in-action for two more months before word arrived that he was a prisoner. John was taken to Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Jul. 6 and the next day to Fort Delaware where he remained a prisoner for the rest of the war. He was paroled in Jun. 1865. After the war he lived in Lafayette Co., FL. He died May 15, 1921 and is buried just northwest of Mayo next to Riverside Baptist Church."
